Mark is a past chair of Oregon's State Professional Responsibility Board, which oversees the discipline process for all lawyers licensed or practicing in Oregon. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and a member of the American Bar Association and of the National Conference of Bar Presidents.

Mark's practice focuses primarily on appeals. He has handled more than 100 cases before the Oregon Supreme Court and the Oregon Court of Appeals. Mark graduated from Reed College and received his law degree from Boalt Hall at the University of California, Berkeley. Mark began his legal career as a clerk at the Oregon Court of Appeals and has practiced before the court since 1990, winning the praise of judges, colleagues, and clients alike. He is one of the most highly regarded appellate attorneys in Oregon, and he knows well how to write a winning brief.

Mark has a particular interest, as well as expertise, in the legal issues faced by infertile couples, step-families, and gay and lesbian couples. He has successfully concluded dozens of adoptions and surrogacy arrangements as well as getting and defending custody and visitation rights for step-parents and non-legal parents, both at trial and on appeal.

Mark Johnson became a member of the Oregon State Bar in 1987 and served as its president in 1999. He also served as president of the National Lesbian & Gay Law Association in 1995 and of the Oregon Gay and Lesbian Law Association (OGALLA) in 1992. In 2003, he received OGALLA's Award of Merit in recognition of his many local and national civil rights achievements.
